About Mrs. Rivera

I am a visual and performing artist, a teacher, a student, a mentor, a protege, a mother, a mother-in-law, a daughter, a wife, a step-mother, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a great-aunt, a reader, a writer, and a citizen of the world.  My ancestors come from all over the planet, and represent a variety of races and cultures: Indigenous North, Central and South America, Africa, Europe, Scandinavia, Central Asia, and the Middle East.  All of this informs what I do as a teacher and as an artist, and is an integral part of who I am.  I simultaneously fit in everywhere and nowhere; this contradiction is very central to how I create.
I love teaching and I love to learn.  My present occupation allows me to do both.
If you are a student in my class, I became your advocate the moment you walked through my door.  I will support you in your learning, help you feel welcome, challenge your ideas, encourage you to be better, make you feel uncomfortable with mediocrity, and will celebrate your successes.  As demanding as I am with my students, I demand even more of myself.  Each day I strive to be better, and strive to help those around me to be better - are you ready to start your journey?
